My Spiritual Quest
A few years ago, I started on path to better understand spirituality and if/where it fit into my life. I grew up Catholic, went to church and Sunday school. It wasn’t something I incorporated into my life as an adult but I was curious. I could totally get on board with all of us being here in the world and in this together. But I wanted to delve more into what spiritually means to people and how to tap into that connectedness and energy. And I was on the hunt for something or someone to aid in my spiritual awakening.
I had watched episodes of Oprah where she would discuss her favorite spiritual books, some that had changed her life. That’s when I started to wonder how it was possible that people’s lives were changed by reading a book? I had tried a few books in the past and they just didn’t seem to resonate with me so I was feeling somewhat frustrated. I was on a search to learn more so I kept an open mind. Just like anything else, certain books, ideas, or approaches appeal differently to each person.
The Start of My Spiritual Awakening
I came across one of Gabby Bernstein’s books at some point and thought it sounded interesting but didn’t pursue it. Then one day while searching on amazon I came across The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith. Ooh, I liked the sound of that so I purchased it. I didn’t know it but this was the beginning of my spiritual awakening.
Align With Love, Let Go of Fear
This concept of letting fear run our lives and overshadowing love was all too real for me. I was stressed out at work and in my personal life with anxiety taking over my body to the point where it didn’t know when I should be awake or asleep. I was questioning my decisions and what I was going to do next, leading with fear most of the way. This had become a normal way of living for me until I went through a big life change and realized I needed to start taking better care of myself. As I began my meditation practice, I also started to realize that something was missing. When I really sat with myself and my thoughts, I thought there must be something greater and bigger than all of us. Hmm…
As I read the book I started to understand the energy that connects all of us and the importance of putting love out into the world. Gabby says, “The moment you choose to disconnect from the loving presence of the Universe, you lose sight of safety, security, and clear guidance that is otherwise available to you. The moment you realign with love and stop relying on your own strength, clear direction will be presented. The presence of love will always cast out fear.” As I started to become more aware of my inner voice and the negative thoughts, I would forgive myself and then ask the Universe to guide me in the right direction. During meditation I started to find calm, to align, and to trust that things happen for a reason. It felt really good to have this level of awareness and I thought, this is the spiritual awakening book I’ve been waiting for.
Spiritual Learnings
There were many great nuggets and exercises in the book but here are the highlights of what resonated with me:
Choose Again
I always have the power to choose again. To forgive the thought and move forward and ask the Universe for help.
Meditate
There’s no right or wrong way to do this. I committed to making some time for myself. Even if it’s two minutes. If my thoughts veer off, then I bring them back again. That’s what mindfulness is about. I made note and honored my feelings.
Trust
Trust that the Universe doesn’t give me anything that I can’t handle. Show up for my assignments and view situations as learning experiences. They are happening for a reason.
Celebrate
Celebrate the wins, no matter how big or small. As I continue on my path and evolve my spiritual practice, I make note of what’s working and celebrate progress when good things happen.
Be Patient
It takes time to find the right combination of what works. I tried different things and if it didn’t resonate then I moved on.
I wanted to share my experience with you as there are so many resources available today and it’s hard to know what will work for you until you try. This was just the beginning for me and I look forward to continuing to expand my soul. I still have plenty of unread books on the shelf waiting to be explored: The Untethered Soul, The Book of Joy, A New Earth, and the list goes on and on. I continue to explore my spiritual horizons daily and choose what works for me. And I encourage you to do the same and find the book, or person, that opens your eyes, and leads you to your spiritual awakening.
