I am GenXWoman, hear me ROAR!

Celebrating the Bridge Generation

The hard-working, innovative, independent, and badass GenXWoman!

Valentine’s Day is on its way, love it or hate it. If you would rather be stabbed by a thousand of Cupid’s arrows than suffer through another candy-heart encrusted holiday, perhaps a virtual get together with your favorite gal pals is in order!

Laughter is good for the soul. We already know this, and science proves it. In a world where our daily lives remained changed, we could all use a good laugh or two. We have the perfect movie list to add to your Galentine’s Day Party lineup.

These classic movies all star the inimitable Marilyn Monroe (and she is the perfect companion for any Galentine’s Day Party). And don’t be fooled. These movies might have a touch of romance, but the star of the show is friendship and laughter, straight up.

And don’t forget a pretty pink or red beverage to cheers with the girls!

Galentine’s Day Party Movies to Make You Laugh

1. Some Like It Hot

Some Like It Hot, to many classic film buffs, is the funniest movie ever made. It is on nearly every movie bucket list, and its popularity might be in part because it is just so darn amusing, even to savvy audiences today. It stars Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe in what might be her best comedic performance. The film is all about what happens when two wise guys go into hiding after witnessing gangsters commit a crime (and as we all know, gangsters don’t like to leave witnesses). They do what you might do in such a quandary. They cross-dress and join an all-girls band. But when they get the hots for Sugar (Marilyn Monroe, the band’s lead singer), comedic hijinks of Shakespearean As You Like It level occur. This is a Galentine’s Day Party movie to truly pop the bubbly with, because it is simple fizzling with classic film charm and laughs.

2. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

If you have never seen Marilyn Monroe’s iconic performance of Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, you’ve been missing out. Now is the perfect time to change that. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes isn’t really about hair color, blonde or otherwise. It is about the friendship between showgirls Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw and their travels to Paris. It fits the bill for the perfect Galentine’s Day Party movie, from its “pretty in pink” fashion to its Parisian charm and shameless celebration of all things girly, not the least of which are diamonds.

3. How to Marry a Millionaire

If there is one thing that we are missing these days, it might be getting together with our gal pals and talking about our latest dating expeditions (because, let’s be honest, dating seems to always be an adventure). Well, How to Marry a Millionaire is the next best thing to a chat session with your friends. The film stars Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall, and wow do these ladies pack quite a punch! Their quest to find a suitable millionaire to marry is full of hijinks and dating wisdom that, well, you can decide if it stands up nowadays. But the menfolk are in no way the point of this movie.

If the pandemic has made anything clear, it’s that we need our besties more than ever. Luckily, the best cure for pandemic woes is a good dose of laughter shared with your best friends. Happy Galentine’s Day!
